Metformin Hydrochloride is used to treat high blood sugar level caused by type 2 diabetes. In the patients with type 2 diabetes, the body does not process insulin hormone properly which is produced by pancreas, thus resulting in high blood sugar level. The oral diabetes medicine is used with a diet and exercise to control high sugar level in the person living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin Hydrochloride works by reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver, decreasing the amount of glucose that your body absorbs, and improving the effect of insulin hormone. The drug is available as a tablet and oral solution. It may be used as a combination therapy, which means you may have to take it with other drugs.

How to take it

The medicine is usually taken by mouth once daily with the evening meal. Follow your doctor’s instructions, you may be asked to take it before your breakfast, lunch and/or dinner.

Dosage

Precautions and side effects
